Blogs & Feeds

Searching for blogs was not exactly easy. Though I eventually found what I was looking for it took me a whole 5 minutes! Searching under Bloglines seem to be the easiest because once you search your able to expand each results. This will give you a glimpse on what you will subscribe to including pictures! My major search was for fashion and came into all kinds of goodies! I even found this blog (Route 79) that I used to read in college, now that was exciting. I'm a straight newbie when it comes to Library Science so I found the.effing.librarian and unshelved. So now I feel kinda like I know what librarians are talking about...just a little.

RSS & Newsfeeds

RSS?? What da ----? I NEVER knew what that meant but thanks to TLC 2.0 i know it means Really simple syndication! HOORAY! My goodness if I knew how to work this earlier can you imagine the amount of time i would save! I LOVE RSS! (Wonder if there is a Mrs RSS?) I usually visit up to 50 sites a day (personal and work sites) and always seem to miss several crucial ones or check friend's blogs to only find out that they haven't been updated in days. But with this i visit one site and check the feeds for any new posts and VOILA! I believe that this would be tremendous benefit for our library and for the county. The first thing that came into mind was Broward Countyline, now that would be great! So come and check my Blogeline. Adios.

Blogging about Technology

I'm not really up-to-date with the technology like I was when I was in college. But something I believe should be MANDATORY is to be able to use basic web 2.0 tools. I feel like librarians are some what in the rut, feeling that technology isn't our friend! I mean 90% of our references are all available online! Also I would really like to have our library to have their own website that host librarian blogs and resources that patrons can use. Also maybe have web 2.0 classes available to the public. Because lets be serious, do you believe the average person know what "podcasting" means??? Maybe I should teach that class...yea right! Take Care!

Flickr MASHUPS!

I believe that the Flickr World Map and the Mappr are the coolest mashups on Flickr. Basically you add tags saying where you took that picture. Lets say you go to Manchester (GO MAN UTD!!) and you visit Old Trafford, in the description you add where you took the picture. Afterwards you download the picture onto a map like say the world! Its quite inspiring, almost feel like taking off on the next plane to India or Hong Kong.

Working in Youth Services is an experience! There is always something new happening in the library. For example, on Tuesdays we have a Homeschool Co-op meet, aka lots of kids in the library. So I was highly surprised to walk out into the picture book area and get a clear shot with out any kids! Oh well, it’s not the end of the world there are always the regular “gamers” who come after school. They seem to have their eyes glued to the computer screen playing Runescape or Halo. Ahhh I love the library!

The easiest and the hardest!

While sitting down to listen to the presentation on "7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners" I started to think, "This is ridiculous! Isn't everyone a lifelong learner? Seriously, we learn something new (regardless if we want to or not) everyday!" But I quailed my pessimistic side and try to remain open and decide which on these “habits" were the easiest and the hardest.

EASIEST!
Well the easiest habit was the first one, "Begin with the end in mind". For me that is automatic. If I decide to take a course first thing that jumps to mind is, "How is that going to help me? And will I need this information?"

HARDEST!
"Creating your own learning toolbox" was my hardest habit. Some how I see my end goal and see that I need to be ready mentally but actually getting all the stuff together for that learning experience I seem to falter. I sometimes do not anticipate the need for certain items used in learning environment.

In short, being a lifelong learner happens regardless if you want to or not. But being a successful lifelong learner is so much more fun
